"This simple and refreshing album will speak deeply, perhaps ' reaching the very core and root of soul', and bring Luella's in-the-moment-breath-of-song into your heart and home" -Banyen Books Review |
Twenty-Two years ago, the cry and call of the Native Cedar Flute penetrated my heart and soul to its inner depths.
A friend had brought me to a music event where i was touched by the playing of Danny Beaton. I was told by my friend that
Danny was self taught through nature as a part of his healing journey. I had always wanted to be musical and artistic, but my childhood
traumas had shut me down and left me feeling i had no talent. Hearing his story i felt inspired. My friend had a standard flute at his home
I sat with it and attempted to play it until i got the breath right, it was a side holding flute, and that first note went in my body
and I knew I had to learn to play.
The next morning I went to a South American shop and bought myself a five dollar little bamboo flute and just started playing and
praying in nature with it. There was alot of trauma and pain in me at the time and I was feeling really stuck and weighed down. The flute became my a new language my heart and soul could communicate through and connect to higher forces of love and spirit.
Two years later a friend of mine who had seen me eyeing a Native Cedar Flute that was $1000, surprised me one night when he picked me up for dinner after my work shift. I sat in the car and he extended his arm to me holding this flute and said, " here, you are worth it!" it was a beautiful gift. I played for about 9 years where hardly anyone heard me play. When I moved to Vancouver, a cree elder adopted me as a niece and when he found out I play the flute he started asking me to play at ceremonies and gatherings, so my playing became about the people now, not just me, and that accelerated and finetuned my ability to channel healing through playing. More and more people started approaching me, telling me they have had really powerful healing experiences with my music. I was in awe and amazement... To see the transition from playing for myself to relieve and heal my pain and suffering to seeing it do the same for others was and still is a. I am still in awe of this today. I now am too totally nature taught with no music training. Since then I have performed hundreds of times and been on several radio and talk shows and this CD has been incredibly well received. :) my heart is full of gratitude.
This CD was a total creation of Grace. I was approached by a producer that wanted to use some of my playing on one of his CD's. He ended up offering me some free studio time and in one session this CD was born. Life is amazing! During the time of creating this CD, for some reason, every new person i was introduced to or I met always heard the name Luella instead of Luannah, so I tuned in to that and felt guided to use that as my music/spirit name, creating a differentiation between my egoic self and the meditative state from which this music was channelled. It felt light and lyrical and an energetic match to this creation, hence my paper name is not on the CD>

"Luella's debut CD, Reunited: The Journey Home, is a meditative journey through the spiritually charged aesthetic mindscape of Native North America. Luella, inspired by Danny Beaton, a self taught native flautist, picked up the cedar flute approximately thirteen years ago. Clearly, those thirteen years constitute an amazing journey of self-discovery, a journey of discovery made possible through the acquisition of a language, the language of traditional native music.
Throughout the CD, Luella, having honed her skills to an expressive state nearing perfection, leaves the listener with a deep sense of inner calm and community with the miracle of the world and one's existence in it. If it could be said that a body of music can be a guidepost to set one on the way to self-discovery then it can certainly be said about Reunited: The Journey Home. In addition to Luella's stellar work on the cedar flute, her flute work is interlaced with her hauntingly moving vocals, reminiscent of those moments in one's life when a deep connection with the universe is felt in the core of the soul. Luella's guest vocalist and musician add to the texture of the album but the credit for the enlightening quality of this album is all Luella's. Reunited: The Journey Home strikes one as a bolt through the soul, charging one's very existence with inner meaning. Luella's debut album is a must listen for any music lover with an interest in enriching the path to self knowledge with the beauty of a deep melodic aesthetic." - Community News |
